Obituary of Emma Quijada Alvarez

On January 29, 2024, our hearts grew heavy as we bid farewell to Emma Alvarez, a cherished soul who graced this world with warmth and love for 89 beautiful years. Emma's journey began in Navojoa, Mexico, on January 12, 1935, and unfolded into a tale of love, resilience, and countless cherished memories.

Naco, Mexico, witnessed the magical union of Emma and Tony Alvarez Sr. of Bisbee—a love story that knew no bounds. Emma proudly became an American Citizen, and together, she and Tony waltzed through life for 61 remarkable years until Tony's gentle departure on June 1, 2014

. Emma's days were painted with the hues of joy as she swayed in perfect harmony with Tony on dance floors, tended to her garden with loving care, and embarked on journeys that etched indelible memories in her heart. The Bisbee Country Club became her sanctuary, where she transformed into the legendary "Tiger Alvarez," long before such titles were celebrated. In 1976, the family's journey led them to Safford, AZ, where Emma continued to find solace in the gentle swing of her golf club. Her laughter echoed through the aisles of Morris Nursery and the corridors of Safford Walmart, leaving a trail of friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Emma's spirit was unwavering, surviving the trials of life as a two-time cancer conqueror. St. Rosa de Lima Church became a sanctuary for her faith, a relationship that spanned over 30 years, and later, St. Thomas of the Apostle in Tucson.

Yet, amidst all these chapters, Emma's greatest joy was her family. She reveled in the laughter of her grandchildren—Manual Alvarez, Chad and Aaron Mason, Andrew and Alex Alvarez—and marveled at the wonder of four great-grandchildren: January Emma, Bentley, Nova, and Hudson. Even her loyal companion, Janny, felt the warmth of her affection. As we bid farewell, we remember Emma not just for the vibrant tapestry of her life but for the enduring kindness that radiated from her gentle smile. In her memory, we find solace and gratitude for the countless moments that weave into the fabric of our shared memories.

Emma is survived by her two sisters, Malena and Alicia, and her children: Tony Alvarez Jr. (Karen), Alma Newberry, Phil Alvarez, and Barbara Alvarez. She joins her husband Tony, four sisters, and her only brother in the embrace of eternity.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Peppi’s House Hospice Services through the TMC Health Foundation, a reflection of Emma's legacy of compassion and care.

Services to celebrate Emma's journey through life will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle church in Tucson on Saturday, March 2nd with a Rosary at 9:45 a.m. followed by the funeral mass at 10:30. Interment to follow at a later date. May the gentle breeze of nostalgia carry Emma's spirit into the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to share in her journey. May she rest in eternal peace.
